Dept aims to reduce deaths among bikers

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Safety Depart­ment aims to reduce fatal road accidents involving motorcyclists by 6% year on year over the next two years.

The department’s road safety programmes will focus on motorcyclists and pillion riders as they accounted for nearly two-thirds of road deaths last year.

Fatal road accidents involving motorcyclists dropped by 31 cases last year – from 4,067 in 2009 to 4,036. The department’s programmes will promote three safety measures: increased visibi­lity of motorcycles with reflective stickers, adoption of high-visibility riding jackets and increasing legal compliance among young motorcyclists.

“Motorcyclists aged between 16 and 25 are the most at risk, with around 40% of road accidents involving riders in that age group,” he said.
