North South M-Cycle Lane by 2020

From NST:-
PUTRAJAYA: The longest motorcycle lane in Malaysia, from the north of Perlis to the southern tip of Johor, will be built in stages from this year to 2020. The lane is expected to cut by half road fatalities from the present 6,800 cases, said Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh.

"It will be built in areas with high fatalities first before it is expanded nationwide." Based on research carried out by his department and the Malaysian Road Safety Institute, the Kuala Lumpur-Klang motorcycle lane cuts down fatalities involving motorcyclists by up to 85 per cent yearly.

To cut cost, Suret said the lanes would be built along federal roads as they already had proper street lighting and "it also has proper access routes and there will not be a need to build alternative routes". Motorcycles of 250cc and above engine capacity would not be allowed to use the lanes as the impact during a crash with smaller motorcycles would be the same as hitting a car, he said.
