Faulty lights force pedestrians to yell

Palista in São Pailo.Image via WikipediaKUALA LUMPUR: If you're a St Joseph school student in Jalan Sentul, you'd better have strong lungs and a loud voice if you want to cross the busy road. This is because the pedestrian crossing traffic lights switch works on only one side of the road. You have to yell across Jalan Sentul for someone from the other side to trigger the traffic lights switch.
"I have to yell to my friend on the other side of the road to press the button and it's hard for me," said a student, who only wished to be known as Shalu.

The situation arose about three months ago and the students had to become more vocal to ensure they were able to cross the busy road safely every day.

Another parent, identifying himself only as Ramond, said: "There are no security guards from the school to help students cross the road. The early morning traffic is quite bad here and parents sending the children to school have to wait until the child crosses safely."

Still, there has been some respite during the morning peak hour. "The traffic police will direct motorists in the morning and allow students to cross at the traffic lights.
